-- skip to blog entries skip to archive page skip to left sidebar skip to right sidebar the rants and raves of a mad man! tuesday, january 11. 2011 last day in beijing well it was the last day in beijing and we closed out some of the last minute things that mengchen needed to do. it was a busy day! we went to the hospital to close out her account there and get the balance of her account. went to the bank and the post office as well. we just got back from visiting her sister, brother-in-law, her twin nephews, and mother. we went out to a place and had a hot pot. this is an interesting concept and we will need to look for something like this in phoenix. i kind of rank it with the mongolian bbq's. for those who are not familiar with it you basically have a pot of hot water that is heated and they bring out various meats and vegitables that you cook in the boiling water. they have a "salad bar" arrangement where you go and mix up your sauces that you put your cooked items into. it was very good and a great experince. it was suppose to be my treat, but her brother-in-law snuck out and paid for the dinner before i could do it. well we all said good-bye, and they wished us both well. i promised her mother that i would take care of her daughter and keep her happy. anyway, the taxi comes at 9am tomorrow to take us to the airport so i am gonna get things packed. look at the souvienger that i am bringng back with me! (look what i got for a bag of snickerdoodles and a bag of caramels!) look what i am dragging back from china! posted by robert gimbel in china trip at 13:01 | comments (2) | trackbacks (0) vote for articles fresher than 7 days! current karma: none, 0 vote(s) 224023 hits -- monday, january 10. 2011 from the computer of mengchen.. well mengchen stepped out for a lil while and i thought i would add to my blog through the use of mengchen's computer. now i have always thought i knew windows xp quite well in that i didn't need to know what language it was in since i know the icons well enough to move around.. well wrong! it has been a struggle to get to this point to even post this message! everytime i start typing in a new box i start typing in russian! click the wrong button and i am now typing in chinese! it has proven to me that i do not know the screens as well as i thought. i was going to use her computer to upload a few photos that are web friendly. however, this is not likely going to happen! yesterday, we ventured out to a market to look for a few things to bring back. mengchen is afraid that i am not warm enough since i am wearing the wooly dan and ashlie gave me for christmas, one of my other wooly's, a t-shirt, and my leather jacket. i tried to tell her that it is not that cold where we are going and we should save the money. i did however almost buy a new hat that makes my head look like a panda! although i think i would make a very ugly panda i think! but i refused the urge for the frivious expenditure! at this point i think we are both looking at getting out of the cold and heading back to the warmth! getting to the airport is going to be interesting. all the cabs here are small cars primarily. and with the luggage we have she thought we might need to get two cabs to get us to the airport. time will tell if that is true or not. but mom or dano, make sure the back is clear! no bowling balls! hahahah i would post some photos of me and mengchen, but she keeps deleting my photos!!! oh well, she has been sneaking a bunch of photos of me! well all is well here and we are looking forward to heading that way in a couple days! ????? ?????? ???? waiting for dessert, this time in english! posted by robert gimbel at 01:04 | comments (2) | trackbacks (0) vote for articles fresher than 7 days! current karma: 5 of 5, 1 vote(s) 228998 hits -- saturday, january 8. 2011 visiting china in january.... hello from china! well yesterday was a good day! i did not freeze to death! when i was watching the weather prior to coming over i saw that it was on average 32f everyday. i thought to myself, that is not too bad. mengchen warned me to bring warm clothes, which for the most part i did. however! i did not take into account the wind chill factor! the temperature in a no wind condition is not too bad, however when the wind starts blowing look out! this makes going out a little more difficult since we walk and take public transportation. the hotel that i am at is close to where mengchen lived and where her sister lives as well. it was fun to wonder around her stomping grounds and see the market she used to visit and just get a feeling for her day to day life! she then pointed out the hotel that she originally was going to book, but they do not accept foreigners at that hotel! i had read on some websites that there are areas that foreigners should not go to, but that would ruin my adventure spirit! besides i have an awesome guide who would not let me get into trouble! the supporting photos will come.. i just have to get them off mengchen's camera! mengchen lived on the 7th floor of the yellow building! posted by robert gimbel at 21:16 | comment (1) | trackbacks (0) vote for articles fresher than 7 days! current karma: 1 of 5, 1 vote(s) 252937 hits -- friday, january 7. 2011 the trip to china... well i made it to china! this time i am an old pro at navigating when i get here.. but i am jumping ahead of myself! since i lost a day coming this way let me start from the beginning. it is thursday morning an i wake up at 4am to catch the super shuttle to the airport. i feed my kids and scratch their lil ears and give them a treat as i walk out the door. i was fricken cold in the morning when i left, but i walked myself out to the gate cause you never know how that is going to go at 4am! i get to the airport fine but the super shuttle guy dodges a coyote on mill avenue after the last pickup! a coyote, as in the dog, not an illegal smuggler! in anycase, nothing was harmed in getting to the airport! i arrive at terminal 2 on time and walk in to the automated check in, it scans my passport and visa and issues me my boarding passes. i now proceed to the process i loath! the rent-a-cop-mall-security-at-the-airport people. i walk around the corner and i get selected for a hand wipe down for explosives... good thing i decided not to do any reloading of ammo the night before and baked snickerdoodles instead.. i am just glad it did not go off with baking soda residue! since i am successful here i can proceed to the line were i provide my boarding pass and passport. the tsa monkey at the podium i don't think has ever seen a passport card before since that is what i handed him.. now i want to point out here that a middle eastern guy was ahead of me in line, was total fumbling around with his id and boarding pass. i will point out he was not "randomly" selected for the explosive residue, since i guess i met their quota. now i get to the xray machines and disassemble my miracle of packing into various tubs, right behind yehob for lack of a proper introduction. he again was fumbling around like he didn't know what he was doing or where he was at. now it appears that the backscatter machine is a "selected" option here as well and yehob was not selected to go through the tsa deathray machine and scooted right through the security. i, however, was not so lucky.. as they try to send me into the radiation chambers of death i told them i would like to opt out, so immediate radios went off "male opt out", 3 or 4 times from various tsa people standing that the controls of this machine.. so i thought i would help and scream "i have chosen to opt out of the deathray machine!" they did not find that as amusing as i did... anycase, they escort me and my belongs back to a table in the back where i immediately "assume" the position.. again, the tsa guy who i will call pedro did not like that i was getting ahead of him. he told me to relax as he explains what this pat down was going to involve. and af
